    New Registrar Appointment

    March 10, 2021

RCDC would like to announce the appointment of Dr. John P. Zarb as the next Registrar of The Royal College of Dentists of Canada effective March 1, 2021.

Dr. Zarb completed his dental training at the University of Detroit Mercy and is a graduate of the University of Toronto Graduate Prosthodontics program. His professional experience is an extensive blend of clinical and academic positions in Canada and the USA, having taught at the University of Toronto, the University of Illinois at Chicago and the University of Rochester, Eastman Institute for Oral Health. He is a Fellow in the Academy of Prosthodontics and a former Director of the American College of Prosthodontists. Dr. Zarb owns Barrie Dental Specialists in Barrie, ON and volunteers as a Staff Prosthodontist at Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto. He has also been involved in several local and national professional associations and is currently a Councillor within the Ontario Dental Association.

Dr. Zarb has been a Fellow of the College since 2005. He started his involvement with RCDC in 2007 as an Examiner and has participated in the written and oral examination administrations since then. He was elected to the position of Prosthodontics Director in 2019, a position he still holds. As Director, Dr. Zarb was an active member of the Governance and Fellowship Affairs Committees.

He credits the RCDC strategic planning session retreat held in December 2019 as being instrumental in his desire to serve the membership of the College as Registrar. He believes that the outcome of this session, the 2020-2023 Strategic Plan (which can be viewed here), will provide the much-needed spring board for RCDC to determine its role as the leader in defining, recognizing and promoting excellence in the dental specialties.

As the College moves forward with a new Registrar, our gratitude must be expressed to Dr. Leland McFadden who has been our Registrar since 2018 and, as always, has demonstrated his unwavering commitment to the College.

    COVID-19 Update

    Updated July 9, 2020

The Royal College of Dentists of Canada continues to monitor the COVID-19 situation. The College is aware that steps need to be taken to protect the safety of our staff, volunteers, examination candidates and stakeholders. To that end, Head Office will be closed until further notice. RCDC staff can still be reached by email or telephone during regular business hours.

The College is guided by, and has continued to closely monitor, recommendations and guidelines developed by Health Canada and other public health agencies. After thorough deliberations, and with the health and safety of the candidates and Examiners at top of mind, the decision was made to first postpone the June 2020 administration of the Fellowship Examination to this fall. They have now been further postponed to 2021.

The Board is acutely aware of the professional significance of the Fellowship designation. It is for this reason that the Board has made the extraordinary decision to grant Provisional Fellowship status to all eligible current and prospective candidates, contingent on their participation at the Fellowship Examination in 2021. The College believes this step will provide the means for eligible candidates to benefit from Fellowship and affiliation with RCDC at a time when Covid-19 has interrupted the usual process.

Provisional Fellows will have the same rights and privileges as Fellows and will be entitled the use of the FRCDC-Provisional designation until they are conferred Fellowship following successful completion of the 2021 Fellowship Examination.

Further information on the Provisional Fellowship can be found on by clicking this link.
